Omega’s first factory was established in 1848, in La Chaux-de-Fonds, in Switzerland, by Louis Brandt. He was just 23 years old when he set-up his first business counter and began trading in watches under his personal name. Eventually, Louis-Paul and César Brandt, the two heirs to the company, successfully took control of business affairs and led the brand to prosperity with enhanced production. A boutique was established in Biel in 1880, laying the foundation for a legendary brand, Omega.

Timeline of Omega

• 1894. The 19-line complex Omega caliber is produced.

• 1909. The first major sports watch is introduced with Omega taking up the role of official timekeeper in Switzerland’s sporting events. This led to further innovations and winning of prestigious awards. Omega managed to progress and survive despite experiencing a tough economic crisis.

• 1930. The brand entered into a merger with Tissot to establish SSIH (Swiss Society for the Watch Industry); this was followed by Lemania joining ranks with the business a couple of years later. Omega has served as the official timekeeper for more than twenty Olympic Games.

• 1942. The brand introduces the first Omega automatic watches.

• 1945. The post-war period, marking the end of the Second World War, contributes to a new development for Omega. NASA endorses the brand’s models: Seamaster and Speedmaster; selecting the Speedmaster as the official chronograph for its space missions. Collectors and the elite wealthy class are attracted to the brand’s Omega De Ville line of timepieces.

• 1969. The Omega Speedmaster traveled to the moon on the wrist of Buzz Aldrin and in 1970, it was instrumental in aiding the astronauts of the Apollo 13 mission to return safely back to Earth.

• 1990s. Omega Seamaster became James Bond’s official watch after it was worn by Pierce Brosnan.
