Vever, a Staunch Supporter of Art Nouveau

The brand was established by Henri Vever; a man who was a jeweler, collector, and book lover, all at once. He came from a family of jewelers, located in Metz. Henri together with his brother, Paul, set up their business at Rue de la Paix; winning prizes at all leading exhibitions in Brussels, Chicago, Moscow, and the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900. Their prestigious clients were inclusive of Alexander III, the Shah of Persia, Sadi Carnot, and prominent American businessmen of the Gilded Age.

The Vever jewelry house was closely linked to the Art Nouveau style of the late 19th century and early 20th century. Henri Vever possessed a great deal of ingenuity and worked to drastically change the jewelry aesthetics of his time. To this day, his creations are looked upon as sources of inspiration for other craftsmen and are considered to be amongst some of the best jewelry collections by both connoisseurs and lovers of luxury jewelry. In addition, they are displayed at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris. The director of the Luxembourg museum, Léonce Bénédite, was one of Vever’s most ardent admirers.

Furthermore, Henri Vever was also an author. He embarked on the vast task of writing a three-volume literary work on 19th-century jewelry ‘La Bijouterie Franҫaise au XIXe Siècle’ or “French jewelry in the 19th century – 1800-1900”. Just like the artisan’s jewelry, his book is an invaluable reference book on the historical aspects of French jewelry.

Vever jewelry, creations of a true artisan

Henri Vever had his own unique style that was easy to discern by all. A style that was distinguishable by its drawing clarity, adjustability, and candor. It is further recognized by its floral designs and large sizes linked to Art Nouveau. In relation to materials, the Vever house makes use of the best stones, paying particular attention to their source. The colors of some blended with the clearness of others yield a perfectly finished jewel.

The simple jewelry pieces are a perfect representation of correctly balancing the elements used in their creation. Henri died in 1942, gifting the world with both jeweled and literary works that will be admired forever.
